If an Arab came to Barranquilla…

This semester I decided to study Dubai. If an Arab came to Barranquilla, he would probably be surprised at how loud, cheerful and communicative people are because in their culture, people tend to be very quiet and quiet. Also, if they came to visit the city they would be interested in knowing all the subcultures that Barranquilla has, because in Dubai the number of subcultures is very small.
If they came during the carnival season, they would be surprised to see people outside their home sharing with friends and strangers because in their culture, due to their religion they tend to avoid all kinds of parties that do not relate to their beliefs. They would also be surprised to see the freedom of expression that exists in Barranquilla with respect to other religions and beliefs, because in their culture it is very rare to see or share with individuals who have different beliefs from their own.
If an Arab came to Barranquilla, he would be surprised at the atmosphere, the quality of the people, the joy they spread and the culture. If an Arab came to Barranquilla, he would probably want to stay and never leave.

Subcultures in Dubai

In recent decades, Dubai has attached great importance to existing subcultures, due to marketing which influences a large part of the population and their buying habits.

Currently, Dubai enjoys the explosion of K-Pop, a musical genre originally from South Korea influenced by various musical genres of the West. This movement focuses on the k-pop idols that are considered almost perfect artists made to measure by a talent agency. His recordings can be found in the mega stores of the shopping center in Dubai. Likewise, there are 5 restaurants that set the place with Korean music such as Alhalab, Orchestra, Cafe Blanc and Harem.

Another important subculture in Dubai is religious groups belonging to Islam, which covers an important part of the population. People belonging to these groups call the prayer made by the muezzin through the speakers from the miranete, official buildings and shopping centers. 5 calls are made a day, and people who are not Muslim cannot enter the mosque.

Arabics vs. Colombians: Lewis cultural model

The behavior of individuals in different cultures is not something that should be taken lightly. It is necessary to take into account their form of interaction, their traditions, attitudes and beliefs.
The people of Dubai, like the Colombians, are classified among the multi-active people in Lewis’s cultural model.

They are characterized by being cheerful, talkative people who perform many tasks at the same time. For the planning and realization of their activities they do not take into account a strict schedule, but the emotions that these activities generate and the importance that it has in their day to day, which can even classify them as impulsive. Likewise, they consider human relations important and consider management as a fundamental part of their work.

Gender roles in Islamic culture

Currently, Islamic culture presents a crisis in its traditional masculinity due to social evolution and female emancipation. However, gender roles are still valid since older people are the ones who have power at all levels and therefore do not have permissive and egalitarian attitudes towards women. Most men are conservative and make use of religion to justify their superiority and domination over women.

However, some women have begun to work and contribute to the family economic structure, their level of participation in decision making is minimal. Unfortunately, women’s salaries are lower than men’s, and the latter are considered by religion as superior beings and are allowed to use violence if the woman is not obedient.

This culture of superiority is transmitted from the division of domestic tasks according to gender: boys leave home and cannot be disturbed, girls stay at home. The man has a projection in the public sphere, but the woman only in the domestic. The school transmits this culture: that the woman is inferior, that she must hide her body, since she is the origin of social chaos and evil.

It should be noted that Islamic culture considers that men and women have the same value, but are not equal. However, these gender roles are in constant construction and evolution, hoping that the gap of superiority between men and women is increasingly minimal.

Dubai: an international oasis

The culture in Dubai is totally different from the western world. For many visitors, is it therefore a bit of a culture shock when they arrive here. There are nationalities from all over the world, people walk in traditional clothes, you’ll find mosques from which prayers sound, you’ll smell the sisha’s sweet smell and you’ll see the Arabic language all around you. Welcome to the colourful world of Dubai.

The United Arab Emirates is a democratic country and adheres to Muslim and Sharia laws. The religion is therefore Islam. Off all the UAE, Dubai is by far the most Western place. Mainly this is due to the influence of the many different cultures living here.

However, there are definitely some things you have to keep in mind when visiting Dubai. There are numerous beliefs about living in Dubai: yachts, exotic animals instead of conventional pets, oil in the yard of each house and gold and diamonds in heaps.

Thus, we continue to feed the idea that Dubai is the capital of billionaires. However, the world capital of billionaires is Beijing, not Dubai. The number of immigrants living in this country is very high and the cost of living in the same, so it could be said that the number of people living in subhuman conditions is alarming. Education also has little accessible costs, so very few people can have the opportunity to receive a quality education.

It sounds surprising, but most of us believe that Dubai was a country, however, Dubai is the most populous city in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) whose capital is Abu Dhabi.

It is important to bear in mind that due to rapid population growth, the creation of infrastructure, pollution caused by cars and the absence of an effective recycling system Dubai is not considered an environmentally attractive place.

Despite all this, visiting Dubai will allow you to enjoy the sound of mosques calling for prayer, the conversations, and the hospitality of its inhabitants. Its development and international projection attract entrepreneurs, adventurers and foodies alike who will have much to discover in this impressive international oasis. Remember that you always show respect and understanding to the local culture and that you adhere to local standards and values.
